Bay of Tela
Bay of Tela is located on the North Caribbean Coast of Honduras 90 km. East of San Pedro Sula, an excellent paved highway connects Tela to it and further onto La Ceiba which is a little over 100 km east.
From the San Pedro Sula airport, Tela is only 1 hour away by road. If you want to reach Telag by bus, Hedman Alas offers direct first class bus service from Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula (city and airport), La Ceiba and Copan (home of the famous Mayan Ruins).
Tela was originally the base of Tela Railroad Company, the owner of Chiquita Bananas. The town today still has the atmosphere of a banana town and this can be seen in some of the town's buildings. Today the town is a sleepy and relaxed Caribbean coastal town with a lot of charm and character.
The Bay of Tela is will known for is white sandy caribbean beaches and the Garifuna culture which can be seen in the nearby villages of Rio Tinto, Miami, Tornabe, San Juan, La Ensenada and Triunfo de la Cruz. In his surround, there are three of the most important and amazing natural parks of Honduras: Punta Sal, Punto Izopo and the Lancetilla Botanical Gardens that is one of the largest tropical botanical gardens in the world.
Tela is well located close to the nearby attractions of La Ceiba such as Pico Bonito National Park, Rio Cangrejal, Cayos Cochinos and the Cuero y Salado Nature Reserve. San Pedro Sula and its history museum, handicrafts market and its many facilities are located nearby. Lago Yojoa, Los Narajos Archaeology Park and Pulhapanzak waterfall can all be visited in a day from Tela and Copan Ruinas is with in visiting distance also.
