Tela

The Bay of Tela lies on Honduras’ North Caribbean Coast, about 90 km east of San Pedro Sula (roughly a two-hour drive along a paved highway). Tela is known for its white-sand beaches and vibrant Garífuna culture, visible in nearby villages such as La Ensenada, San Juan, Tornabé, Miami, and Triunfo de la Cruz.

Nature lovers will enjoy the surrounding Jeannette Kawas National Park (formerly Punta Sal), Punta Izopo National Park, and the Lancetilla Botanical Garden, one of the largest tropical botanical gardens in the Americas. Visits to these natural wonders can easily be arranged from Hotel Maya Vista.

Historically, Tela grew around the banana trade and the Tela Railroad Company, which shaped the town’s development in the early 20th century. Today, it is a charming Caribbean coastal town with relaxed streets, historic buildings, and a rich local culture.

Tela is also well positioned for exploring nearby attractions, including Pico Bonito National Park, Rio Cangrejal, Cayos Cochinos, Cuero y Salado Nature Reserve, Lago Yojoa, Los Naranjos Archaeological Park, Pulhapanzak Waterfall, and the world-famous Copán Ruinas.

Many tours to these sites can be arranged directly from Hotel Maya Vista.

Honduras

Honduras is located in the heart of Central America, covering 112,492 km². It shares borders with Guatemala to the west, El Salvador to the southwest, and Nicaragua to the southeast. The Caribbean Sea lies to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south (at the Gulf of Fonseca).

The official language is Spanish, though English is widely spoken in the Bay Islands (Roatan, Utila and Guanaja) and in most tourist areas. The official currency is the Lempira (HNL), but U.S. dollars and major credit cards are also commonly accepted.

Travelers require a valid passport to enter Honduras; citizens of many Western countries do not need a visa for tourism and are typically granted an entry permit for up to 90 days, with extensions available depending on nationality.

Honduras is known for its natural diversity, cultural heritage, and archaeological treasures, from tropical beaches and coral reefs to mountainous highlands and rainforests. Major airports in San Pedro Sula (SAP) and Tegucigalpa (TGU) connect the country to international destinations.
